I’m not sure about where you live (the weather in Boulder is still pretty crazy haha), but in most places, the season of denim shorts is finally upon us! I legitimately live in my denim shorts all summer long. I have several different pair because 99% of the time, it’s what you will find me in!
Since I’ve tried on about 100 denim shorts within the last year or two, today I wanted to curate a little denim shorts shopping guide for you guys! Finding the right denim shorts for you can be tough – cut-offs aren’t for everyone, maybe you’re not ready for the mom short yet lol, how do they run, etc. SO, below I’ve rounded up my favorite denim shorts for several different categories: a little more length, favorite cut-offs, budget-friendly options, and more!

So, if cut-off shorts aren’t for you, Madewell has tons of great options for denim shorts with a little bit more length, but definitely not “mom shorts”! I have this pair and love them. They are high rise, but still comfortable. I found them to run TTS (I got my normal size, 25). But if you want them to fit looser, I’d recommend going up a size. I also love this pair for an option with a little more length, and think the light wash is so fun for spring and summer.
As far as cut-offs go…one teaspoon probably wins the award for overall fave cut-off shorts for me. For the longest time, I couldn’t justify spending almost $100 on cut-off denim shorts, but I kid you not…I have worn mine hundreds of times. And they’ve lasted me years! I love the loose, easy fit on these, and I’m convinced they are so flattering on any body type. I think these run a tad big…but I still got them in my normal size (size 25) because I like them to fit a little loose. Here are my favorite one teaspoon shorts:
If you are wanting cut-off denim shorts, but not quite as short as the one teaspoons…this year I think I found the holy grail of all denim cut-off shorts. These loose fitting cut-off shorts are the best of ALL worlds. They are a medium rise, not too short, not too long…and they are cut-offs, without being totally destroyed. They are so comfortable and so flattering and 100% worth every penny! I’ve only had mine a few weeks and I’ve worn them at least 7 times already. (You can see what they look like on me here and here). I found them to run TTS (I got my normal size – 25). But, if you are in between two sizes, I’d suggest going down a size.
If you are wanting more budget-friendly options for denim shorts, I think Topshop has several great options! I personally find that their shorts run small, so I go up a size (I usually get a 4). I have this pair of fray hem shorts (only $52) and love them! (You can see what they look like on me here).
Okay, that was probably more information than you ever wanted to know about my denim shorts obsession haha. But hopefully this makes your shopping a little bit easier, and helps you find a pair (or…pairs, in my case!) that you really love! Thanks for reading!
