3 things my mother taught me

If you guys have been following me for a while, then you’ve probably met my momma via instagram or seen her on here a few times! I joke with my mom that I think my followers like her more than me lol anytime I post her I always get so many DM’s saying how adorable she is. And she absolutely is! I hope I look as good as my mom does when I’m 60 (sorry Mommy, I just revealed your age to everyone haha but you should be proud). While my mom is truly adorable and looks amazing…she’s also been probably the biggest influence in my life for reasons much deeper than that. So, today, in honor of Mother’s Day around the corner, I want to share the biggest 3 things my mother has taught me!

(Side note – I wish she could’ve been in these photos with me! But since she still lives in Texas and we’re in Colorado it wasn’t feasible this time around!).

The number 1 thing my mom has taught me: Proverbs 31:30 – “Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Yes, my mom is physically beautiful and takes great care of herself. But ultimately, her beauty comes from her fear of the Lord. She has taught me that both in word and in how she lives her life. She values taking care of her body and skincare and all of that good stuff…but since I was a little girl my mom has taught me that a woman’s true beauty is found in her love for and security in Christ. That’s what makes a woman truly beautiful, with a beauty that is not fleeting. My mom values her walk with the Lord more than any physical form of beauty and she has passed that value on / modeled this so well to me and all of my sisters!

#2: The importance of your husband knowing that you respect and trust him

This one might seem kind of random, but even before Michael and I were married…my mom taught me how important it is that a husband feels respected and trusted by his wife. When Michael and I were dating, I was starting to get sooo antsy that he hadn’t proposed yet (we only dated a year and a half lol but hey, when you know you know)…and I remember my mom telling me how important it is that I did not force Michael into this decision. She told me that Michael ultimately needed to know that I respected him and trusted him no matter what, and that he didn’t walk into this decision feeling forced or pressured.

That concept has obviously proven true in marriage as well. Anytime Michael and I have disagreed on something or maybe I don’t 100% agree with what he believes we need to do…my mom always advises me to respect and trust my husband, as the spiritual leader of our family. This has been so important in our marriage because I’ve learned…when a man feels respected, he feels loved. It’s a concept I’m still learning and growing in (and probably will be for the next 50 years haha), but it’s a value my mom has instilled in me since I was a little girl.

#3. No matter what, I know that God is sovereign, and He is loving

I remember my mom saying this over and over growing up. When my granny was sick with cancer, when my mom’s dad died suddenly, and in so many other heartbreaking situations…my mom still said and truly believed that no matter what, we can still trust in the love and sovereignty of God. That’s where her peace came from. I have carried this truth with me into my adult life, as I’ve faced trials, heartache, or uncertainty. Even in those times, I can still have peace knowing that God is in control, and no matter what, He is still good! I have memories of my mom saying this to me as young as 8 years old…and she still lives this truth out today.

My mom really has taught me so much and I am so thankful. One of the many things that I definitely inherited from her is a love for fashion and shopping! I have memories of her coming home with a new dress for me when I was about 6 years old and it just made my LIFE! I was always so happy when she would buy me a new dress or take me shopping with her. Something my mom and I have in common is our love for Kendra Scott – especially her new summer collection, which I’m wearing today! Whenever my siblings and I are trying to come up with Mother’s Day gift ideas, Kendra Scott is usually our go to. My mom loves her stuff, and Kendra Scott has such a wide variety of options! You could go big with statement earrings, or do a more delicate necklace for everyday! I’ve rounded up some of my favorites from the Kendra Scott summer collection before which would all make great Mother’s Day gifts!
