skincare while traveling!

Summertime is here meaning lots of vacation and travel! I don’t know about you, but my skin has as tendency to freak out when I travel. I’m not sure if it’s the airplane or a new routine or eating different foods…but my skin is not a huge fan of traveling. So, today I wanted to share some of my best tips for taking care of your skin while traveling!

Before we get to the actual travel part, let’s talk about prepping your skin for travel. Two things are key: exfoliation and hydration. So, the night before your flight exfoliate your skin with either an exfoliating wash (I love this drunk elephant bar for an exfoliator) or an exfoliating mask (this Drunk Elephant Babyfacial is the end all be all when it comes to exfoliating. Worth every penny). After your exfoliation, continue with the rest of your normal skincare routine.

The morning before your flight, make sure to really hydrate your skin. I recommend using a hydrating mask – this one by honey potion is a favorite of mine. It will nourish and revitalize your skin and leave it really hydrated for your flight!

Now onto the actual flying part. My first piece of advice: if you can help it…try not to wear makeup on the airplane. Makeup can clog your pores and cause your skin to hang onto microorganisms that you don’t want on your skin! Foundations can also be drying which is the last thing you need on a plane. If you have an appointment or if you’re meeting with people immediately after you land, bring a small bag (i love this cosmetic bag) with a cleanser, moisturizer, foundation, and lip color that you can apply in the airplane bathroom before your meeting!

During your flight, it’s important to really seal in your skin’s moisture, and there’s no better way to do that than a good facial oil. This marula oil is the best facial oil I’ve ever used and will keep your skin from getting dehydrated on the plane. I would suggest applying it before the flight, and maybe putting 2 drops on for every 60mins you are on the plane. (If you have dry skin, do 3 or 4 drops. My skin is closer to oily though).

Once you land, take extra care of your skin the first night. It’s probably a good idea to use an exfoliating wash again (or even an exfoliating mask) and apply a really good moisturizer. I mix my marula oil with this b-hydra gel and apply to my face, before I apply my favorite moisturizer. I do these things after exfoliating.

OR! My new favorite skincare travel secret weapon is this probiotic masque! The first night after you land…wash your face with your normal cleanser, apply your night serum, and finish your skincare routine with the probiotic masque. This masque is exfoliating and hydrating at the same time which is exactly what your skin needs after traveling. You can sleep in it overnight and rinse in the morning! Seriously a game changer when it comes to travel! [If you don’t want to sleep in it, you can just put it on for 15-30mins and then rinse].

Drinking tons of water will do wonders for keeping your skin hydrated and keeping breakouts at bay. I also love to use this jade roller, especially after flights, to help with any inflammation or swelling! You can use the jade roller morning and night after you do your skincare routine to really seal in those serums (and help with inflammation).

You might think if you have oily skin, none of this applies to you. But it does! People with oily skin actually produce more oil during these travel times to overcompensate for the moisture loss. So, still follow these tricks to keep your skin under control.

Do you have any tips for taking care of your skin while traveling? I’d love to hear about them in the comments below! Thanks for reading!
