3 simple tips for hosting guests

When Michael and I lived in Dallas, we rarely had house guests since the majority of our friends and family also live in Dallas. If we hosted someone, it was for maybe one night, maybe once every 2 months or so. We’ve never hosted so much in our lives than when we moved to Colorado! I feel like we are hosting friends or family at least a few times a month (during CO’s peak seasons at least) every month. At first, this was pretty intimidating for me. I’m definitely an introvert and having someone stay in your house will bring up insecurities you never knew you had haha. “Our house isn’t perfect, what if i’m a terrible hostess, what if they hate my coffee,” etc. This might seem random, but it was honestly one of my new year’s resolutions to get over my fear of hosting people and learn to welcome people into our house with open arms! So, today I want to share some guest bedroom decor with you guys, as well as 3 simple tips for hosting!

Tip #1: Get a guest bedroom ready

This might seem like a no-brainer tip, but it makes hosting so much less intimidating (and pleasant for your guests) if you have a nice guest bedroom set up for them. As you can see, our guest bedroom decor is really simple, nothing fancy. (Still working on getting a few more things here and there), but, it’s a designated space for our guests to make themselves feel at home.

When getting your guest room set up, or picking out guest room decor…there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Is the bed big enough and is it comfortable? Do you have enough pillows on the bed and are they comfortable? You don’t need to go out and drop a ton of money on the nicest bed ever, but I’d recommend testing out the bed you’re having your guests sleep on, just to make sure its comfortable enough and you have the right amount of pillows/blankets, etc!
  • For guest bedroom decor, I’d suggest keeping it pretty neutral! Yes, I went with a blush pink duvet haha but figured it was neutral enough because it’s not a bright pink – more of a neutral blush. I also paired the duvet with mostly neutral accessories. [I shopped for almost all of our guest bedroom decor at Urban Outfitters! They have an amazing home selection. I could spend YEARS in that store or on their website!] By keeping your guest bedroom neutral, it keeps you from feeling the need to change things up every few months, and also makes men or women feel equally comfortable/at home in the space.
  • We also like to keep certain things in our room like a fan (anyone else have to sleep with white noise?!) and extra phone chargers or plugs

Tip #2: Ask your guests ahead of time for specific requests

Let’s be real – staying in a bed/house that’s not your own is never as comfortable as your own bed. So, to try and make our guests feel as at home and comfortable as possible, I try to ask people ahead of time if they have any specific requests for while they’re staying at our house! A certain kind of coffee they like, what they like to eat for breakfast, if they need the room to be totally dark, if they have to have the AC set to a certain temp at night, etc. This gives your guests a chance to vocalize anything they might need to make their stay more comfortable!

Tip #3: Divide and conquer with your spouse

Michael is always SO helpful when we have guests in town. Hosting can be intimidating but it’s a lot less intimidating when your house is in tip top shape and you have everything prepared and ready to go for your guests! Michael and I divide up tasks like washing the sheets, putting the towels out, getting fresh flowers for the house, etc. Not all of the responsibility falls on either one of us. We split it up and it makes it a fun team effort to make our guests feel at home and comfortable as possible.

Lastly, when it comes to hosting…never underestimate the power of wine, a good cheese tray, candles, and fresh flowers lol (but really). Having these things out on your kitchen island instantly makes your house feel more homey and who doesn’t love wine and cheese?!

In all reality though, remember that no house is perfect. Don’t let that fear hold you back from hosting friends and family! Hosting can be such a beautiful way to serve people in your life, and give them a small glimpse into your everyday life at home…which is a really cool way to grow in your friendship with these people you’re hosting.
